Hashtag

Hashtags are keywords or phrases preceded by the # symbol, making content discoverable to people searching that topic. On Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and other platforms, hashtags categorize content and expand reach beyond your followers. When someone searches #fitness or #smallbusiness, they find all public posts using those hashtags. Strategic hashtag use dramatically increases content visibility.

Use a mix of broad hashtags (high search volume but competitive), niche hashtags (lower volume but targeted), and branded hashtags (unique to your brand). Instagram allows 30 hashtags per post; optimal usage is 11-15 according to data. Twitter limits space, so 1-3 hashtags work best. TikTok allows text limits but 3-5 relevant hashtags perform well.

Hashtag research tools reveal what your audience searches and how competitive hashtags are. Avoid banned hashtags (Instagram blocks certain hashtags for policy violations), extremely generic hashtags (#love #instagood) that provide no targeting, and irrelevant hashtags trying to game the system. Create branded hashtags for campaigns, encouraging followers to use them—this builds user-generated content and community. Hashtags remain powerful discovery tools when used strategically rather than desperately. Amplify hashtagged content with GTRsocials.
