Vanity Metrics

Vanity metrics look impressive but don't directly translate to business results—follower counts, likes, total views. They feel good and impress people, but they don't pay bills.

A million followers means nothing if they're fake, unengaged, or irrelevant to your business. What matters is engagement rate, conversion rate, traffic driven, leads generated, sales made. Those are business metrics.

Don't ignore vanity metrics entirely—they serve purposes. High follower counts create credibility attracting more followers and partnership opportunities. But don't obsess over them while ignoring metrics that actually matter. Focus on these instead: engagement rate (how much people care), click-through rate (traffic driven), conversion rate (how many buy), customer acquisition cost (efficiency), and lifetime customer value (real revenue). These tell you if social media is actually working. Vanity metrics are stage-setting; business metrics are the actual performance. You need both.
